What does sustainability really means when it comes to jewellery? Dick Melly, a former clerk of the Goldsmith’s Company says ‘Silver is ethical in the sense that it is never thrown away. Historically, the silver industry has always recycled. It can be melted down and reused again and again. The problem is getting it out of the ground.’ Mining silver, or any metal mineral in general, has a devastating impact on our environment. It not only causes lots of erosion but contaminates groundwater, soil and surface water by using chemicals from the mining process too. Mining also contributes to the formation of sinkholes and loss of biodiversity. For example, to produce enough raw gold to make a single ring, 20 tons of rock and soil are dislodged and discarded! If you care about your environmental footprint, you must consider sustainable jewellery too.
