Green Living | Back Garden Greenhouse

There’s nothing quite like self-sufficiency and growing your own food was my dream for a few years. When we moved into the new home, I applied for the allotment plot and got one the next month (I’ll tell you more about my allotmenting journey in another post). Unfortunately, I was told we plot holders aren’t allowed to have a greenhouse on the plot. So I knew straight away that I need one in our back garden.

Būti mažiau priklausomai nuo parduotuvių ir užsiauginti savo maisto seniai buvo mano svajonė. Kuomet įsigijom savo namą, dar prieš persikeliant aš užsirašiau į eilę gauti daržo plotą, kurį gavau po mėnesio (apie savo daržininkystės patirtį daugiau papasakosiu kitame įraše). Tačiau buvome įspėti, kad daržo asociacijos taisyklės draudžia statyti šiltnamius sklypuose. Tuomet supratau, kad man reikia šiltnamio galiniame kieme.

I wanted a wooden octagonal-shaped greenhouse that would look pretty in our garden. Because you know, I am all about not only practicality but aesthetics too. I ordered mine from Robert Dyas (it’s currently out of stock). It took us more time than I imagine to build it but believe it or not, the longest it took me to paint it! It was a lockdown in the UK and therefore really difficult to find the right paint for a decent price. I got white colour but it was too white and just didn’t look right so I waited until we were able to get to the shop and get something I really like. Finally, I got Cuprinol “Natural Stone” and it was exactly what I was looking for!

Norėjau būtent šešiakampio, medinio šiltnamio, kuris turėjo ne tik atstoti šiltnamio funkciją, bet ir puošti kiemą. Nes man svarbu ne tik praktiškumas, bet ir estetika. Maniau, kad metalinis šiltnamis tiesiog užgriozdins kiemą. Radau tai ko ieškojau Robert Dyas puslapyje (šiuo metu šie šiltnmiai išparduoti). Surinkti šiltnamį prireikė daug daugiau laiko nei įsivaizdau (jetau, kiek ten daug detalių!), tačiau norit tikėkit, norit ne, ilgiausia man užtruko jį nudažyti! Tuo metu buvo karantinas ir rasti norimą spalvą už normalią kainą buvo tiesiog neįmanoma. Balta spalva kurią gavau man nepatiko, nes buvo tiesiog per balta, aš norėjau prigesintos, kreminės. Todėl teko palaukti, kol buvo galima rasti mano norimą spalvą. Galiausiai, įsigijau Cuprinol “Natural Stone”, kuri buvo būtent tai ko norėjau!

Growing Food in a Small Space

The greenhouse is quite small so I had to be creative in order to save space. I decided to grow tomatoes on the ground rather than on the shelves so installed only one shelf instead of two. I left one shelf for small pots and seedlings until they go to the allotments and later on I was growing sweet peppers in the pots. Under the shelf and in between tomatoes I sowed lettuce, radishes, parsley, basil. I also have an idea to install hanging baskets and use the space around the greenhouse. Behind the greenhouse, I am planning to place a wooden planter and grow there carrots. And I have lots of pots with various herbs around the greenhouse.

Šiltnamis yra gana miniatiūrinis, todėl stengiausi kūrybingai išnaudoti erdvę. Nusprendžiau,kad pomidorus auginsiu ne ant lentynų, o sodinsiu tiesiai į žemę, todėl prisukome tik vieną lentyną. Kitą palikau mažiems vazonėliams ir sodinukams laikyti iki kol šie iškeliaus į daržą, o vėliau ant lentynos auginau paprikas. Po lentyna ir tarp pomidorų sodinau salotas, ridikėlius, petražoles ir bazilikus. Dar turiu idėją vėliau pritaisyti prikabinamus vazonus ir išnaudoti ervę aplink šiltnamį. Už šiltnamio planuoju pastatyti didelį medinį lovelį ir jame auginti morkas. Aplink šiltnamį pilna vazonėlių su prieskoninėm žolelėm.

Growing herbs for my friends

Even though the greenhouse is small, I was surprised how much you can grow in such a tiny area! Fresh herbs always there, sweet peppers and aubergine ripening and so many tomatoes! We picked them for salad, everyday meals and prepared tomato sauce for the winter!

Nors šiltnamiukas ir nedidelis, buvau maloniai nustebinta, kiek daug galima užsiauginti tokioje nedidelėje erdvėje! Švieži prieskoniai visada po ranka, baklažanai ir paprikos noksta, o pomidorus ne tik nuolat skiname salotoms ir kitiems patiekalams, bet dar ir prisiruošiau pimidorų pastos žiemai!
